There are four prideful ones in the world: the ox among livestock, the lion among animals, the eagle among birds, the whale among fish – and man can overcome all of them.
The nature of these animals—the ox, the lion, the eagle, and the leviathan—is that they fear no other creature, yet a human being is able to rule over them all.
('Rabbi Berekhyah in the name of Rabbi Abahu said: You find four proud ones in the world because they are arrogant, and the Holy One, blessed be He, is proud over them. How so? The ox among beasts, the lion among animals, the eagle among fliers, and among fish none is proud like the leviathan, and who is proud over all of them? Man.' – Midrash Tehillim, Psalm 93).
