The Pledge Is Lost – Your Money Is Lost

The Pledge Is Lost – Your Money Is Lost

If the collateral given for a loan is lost, it becomes difficult to reclaim the debt, and the money is considered gone. Figuratively: When one loses the guarantee or safeguard of something, it often means the entire investment or hope is lost.

("Rabbi Akiva says: The lender may say, ‘Did I not lend you only against the pledge? If the pledge is lost – your money is lost.’ But if he lent him with a contract and a pledge, all agree that if the pledge is lost, the money is lost." — Bava Metzia 81b)
