Ba'al Kri'ah, reader of weekly portion of the Law in synagogue

A person skilled in reading the Torah or a scroll in the synagogue according to the cantillation marks of the text.

("And the reader may not read the scroll until it is told to him 'read,' but if there is a fixed Ba'al Kri'ah for this, it is not necessary to wait for the public's announcement, since he is appointed for this." – Arukh HaShulchan Orach Chayim, Laws of Megillah, Siman 580.)

אָדָם הַמֻּמְחֶה לִקְרִיאָה בַּתּוֹרָה אוֹ בִּמְגִלָּה בְּבֵית הַכְּנֶסֶת עַל פִּי טַעֲמֵי הַמִּקְרָא.

("וְאֵין לְהַקוֹרֵא לִקְרוֹת אֶת הַמְּגִלָּה עַד שֶׁיֹּאמְרוּ לוֹ קְרָא, אַךְ אִם יֵשׁ עַל זֶה בַּעַל קְרִיאָה קָבוּעַ א"צ לְהַמְתִּין עַל אֲמִירַת הַצִּבּוּר כֵּיוָן שֶׁהוּא מְיֻחָד לָזֶה"- עָרוּךְ הַשֻּׁלְחָן אֹרַח חַיִּים הִלְכוֹת מְגִלָּה סִימָן תרצ)
