pit of destruction / hell / grave / nethermost pit

Bottomless pit. By extension: a lowly state. Or: grave. (Originally, 'shachat' means a pit for trapping living creatures, a snare.)

("But you, God, will bring them down to the pit of destruction; bloodthirsty and deceitful men shall not live out half their days, but I will trust in you" – Psalms 55:24; and: "And for this their verdict was sealed: to the pit of destruction, for they had to learn and did not learn" – Tractate Sotah 35b; and: "And for the wonders of the mufti that went down with their owners to the pit of destruction" – S.Y. Agnon, Until Now, Avi HaShor, p. 267)
