With an Upright Head

With an Upright Head

With a lifted and straight head. By analogy: with honor or self-pride.

"And when the Edomites fell in the days of Amaziah, they did not set a king in their place and have not lifted up their head until this day" - Seder Olam Rabbah (Leiner) Chapter 20, and likewise: 'But the swarm of birds is explained on its side "walking on four," for every bird that walks on two legs has its neck upright and its head upward, relying on its wings and flying constantly, and therefore is called a winged bird and a common bird. But those with four legs walk low' - Ramban, Vayikra Chapter 11.
