Know Whence You Have Come and Whither You Are Going
Do not forget from where you originated and what your end is destined to be. By analogy: Do not forget where you grew up or how you were educated, and what your goal is that you strive toward.
(“Akavya ben Mahalalel said: Reflect on three things and you will not come to sin—know from where you came, where you are going, and before whom you are destined to give judgment and accounting: from where you came—from a putrid drop; where you are going—to a place of dust, worms, and decay; and before whom you are destined to give judgment and accounting—before the King of kings, the Holy One, blessed be He. Likewise: when I reached the words of the Ramban, who said, ‘Set it upon your heart always—from where you came and where you are going, and that you are but worms and decay in your life, and all the more so in your death,’ I closed the prayer book.”)

אַל תִּשְׁכַּח מֵהֵיכָן מוֹצָאֲךָ וּמָה סוֹפְךָ הוֹלֵךְ לִהְיוֹת. בְּהַשְׁאָלָה: אַל תִּשְׁכַּח הֵיכָן גָּדַלְתָּ אוֹ אֵיךְ הִתְחַנַּכְתָּ וּמָה הַיַּעַד שֶׁלְּךָ אֵלָיו אַתָּה שׁוֹאֵף.
