The first generations (of the Sages of the Talmud)/the latter generation
The latter generations are considered the generations close to our own time, and the first generations are considered the generations that were in the days of the Tanakh or the Mishnah and the Gemara. In the days of the Mishnah, the Tannaim after Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakkai were considered part of the latter generations (see also: "Rishonim and Acharonim").
