It is not the viper that kills, but sin that kills

It is not the viper that kills, but sin that kills

Disasters come as a result of sins, while one who acts righteously is protected from them.

(“The Sages taught: There was an incident in a certain place where there was a viper causing harm to people. They came and told Rabbi Hanina ben Dosa. He said to them: Show me its hole! They showed him its hole, he put his heel on the mouth of the hole, the viper came out and bit him, and the viper died. He took it on his shoulder and brought it to the study hall. He said to them: See, my sons, it is not the viper that kills, but sin that kills. At that moment they said: Woe to the man encountered by a viper, and woe to the viper encountered by Rabbi Hanina ben Dosa” – Berakhot 33a.)
