Epicurean, atheist, skeptic
A term for someone who denies religion or opposes the observance of commandments, or a term for an atheist who denies faith in the existence of God. The origin of the term is in the name of the Greek philosopher Epicurus, who denied the existence of the soul after death.
(Our Rabbis taught (Numbers 15): 'Because he has despised the word of the Lord...'—this is he who says the Torah is not from Heaven. Another explanation: 'Because he has despised the word of the Lord'—this is an Epicurean (Sanhedrin 99a). Also: 'The word Epicurean is an Aramaic word; it means frivolity and contempt for the Torah or its bearers. Therefore, this name is given to one who does not believe in the foundations of the Torah' (Maimonides, Commentary on the Mishnah, Introduction to Perek Chelek, 7, 313). Also: 'There are Epicureans who say the world is necessary existence... but in truth, only the Blessed Name alone is necessary existence, but all the worlds and all that is in them are possible existence' (Rabbi Nachman of Breslov, Likutey Moharan, Torah 52).
