A person who truly loves his friend rebukes him or criticizes him to his face in order to help him improve his behavior. One reproves those whom he loves or cares about.

אָדָם שֶׁאוֹהֵב בְּכֵנוּת אֶת חֲבֵרוֹ מוֹכִיחַ אוֹתוֹ אוֹ מוֹתֵחַ בְּפָנָיו בִּקֹּרֶת עָלָיו כְּדֵי לַעֲזֹר לוֹ לְשַׁפֵּר אֶת הִתְנַהֲגוּתוֹ. הָאָדָם מוֹכִיחַ אֶת מִי שֶׁהוּא אוֹהֵב אוֹ אֶת מִי שֶׁאִכְפַּת לוֹ מִמֶּנּוּ.
