נֶאֱמַר עַל אָדָם שֶׁאֵינוֹ חָכָם אַךְ שְׁתִיקָתוֹ גּוֹרֶמֶת לַאֲחֵרִים לַחֲשֹׁב שֶׁהוּא נָבוֹן. מְבֻסָּס עַל הַפָּסוּק (מִשְׁלֵי יז, כֹּחַ) "גַּם אֱוִיל מַחֲרִישׁ חָכָם יֵחָשֵׁב/ אֹטֵם שְׂפָתָיו (יֵחָשֵׁב ל) נָבוֹן" (תִּקְבֹּלֶת נִרְדֶּפֶת-חֲסֵרָה).
