Drinking brings hearts together/ wine makes conviviality
The value of drinking in a great company is that it has the power to bring hearts closer among its participants.
("Rabbi Yochanan said on the authority of Rabbi Yose ben Kisma: Great is drinking, for it separated two families of Israel, as it is stated (Deuteronomy 23) concerning the one who did not meet you with bread and water. And Rabbi Yochanan himself said: It distances those who are near and brings those who are distant closer, blinds the eyes of the wicked, causes the Divine Presence to rest upon the prophets of Baal, and his folly becomes arrogance." - Sanhedrin 93b. And similarly: "He will say to his daughters, 'Wherefore have ye left the man? Call him, and let him eat bread.' Therefore, he was privileged to be brought near in Israel. עֶרְכָּהּ שֶׁל שְׁתִיָּה בְּצַוְתָּא גָּדוֹל כִּי יֵשׁ בָּהּ לִגְרֹם לְקֵרוּב לְבָבוֹת בֵּין הַשֻּׁתָּפִים לָהּ.
