The writing was on the wall
By metaphor: the outcome was clear from the beginning. It was a warning preceding the event. It had already appeared in the past as a sign of what was to come and required attention (according to the story in Daniel chapter 5, where during King Belshazzar's feast a hand appeared writing words on the wall, words that became clear as a prophecy which Daniel succeeded in understanding and thereby gained prominence).
("Then a man's finger was sent from before him, and this inscription was written: "From the beginning, from "You are weighed in the balances and found deficient, O Persia - your kingdom has been divided and given to the Medes and Persians" - Daniel 5:21, and so on: "And Belshazzar sat on his throne, and his companions and his great men (the great men of his kingdom) were in the service, and God sent an angel, and in the place where they sat there came a hand out of the wall, and wrote on the wall: "O king!
