Tradition (Halachah) over-rides the biblical text
Sometimes their behavior does not match the language of the written command.
("Rabbi Yishmael Omer used to say that in three places, a woman would go around the place where the Torah reads, saying (and he would read 17) and shed his blood and cover it with dust, and she would go and say in every matter that grows grapes, the Torah said (things like this), and she would write for it a book of the Law, and she would go and say in every matter that is in the third place, the Torah said in the third place, and she would go and say in every matter"- Books of Proverbs (see paragraph 222)

מִקְרִים בָּהֶם הַהֲלָכָה אֵינָהּ תּוֹאֶמֶת אֶת לְשׁוֹן הַצִּוּוּי הַמִּקְרָאִי.
