Whoever translates a verse or a judgment in a literal translation is as if he were lying. Sometimes the art of translation requires a deviation from the literal translation because there is no exact equivalent for the original word in the language into which one is translating.

מִי שֶׁמְּתַרְגֵּם פָּסוּק אוֹ מִשְׁפָּט בְּתַרְגּוּם מִלּוּלִי כְּאִלּוּ בּוֹדֶה שֶׁקֶר. לְעִתִּים מְלֶאכֶת הַתִּרְגּוּם מְחַיֶּבֶת סְטִיָּה מֵהַתַּרְגּוּם הַמִּלּוּלִי כִּי אֵין מַקְבִּילָה מְדֻיֶּקֶת לַמִּלָּה הַמְּקוֹרִית בַּשָּׂפָה אֵלֶיהָ מְתַרְגְּמִים.
