To be hurt/ to become a heretic
In the question: He examined and was absorbed in a negative way. He became interested in apostasy and abandoned the commandments of religion. He became attached to Epicureanism. Or: He peered into the external world, into his own world, and was absorbed by it.
("We heard Rabban: Four men gathered in Pardes, and these were: Ben Aza'i, Ben Zuma, another, and Rabbi Akiva. Rabbi Akiva said to them: When you are praying before the pure stones, do not say, 'Water, water!' ... Ben Aza'i looked and died... Ben Zuma looked and was wounded, and about him the inscription says (in addition to this) 'Dabash, you found food, and you are like a snake.'" "You will be satisfied and will vomit it. Then cut down the plantings. Rabbi Akiva went out in peace" - Hagiga Yad B)
