He gave up his soul. He stood up for himself in the face of great danger or great loss for the good of others or for the good of an idea dear to him. He paid a great price knowingly (literally: offering himself as a sacrifice).

מָסַר אֶת נַפְשׁוֹ. הֶעֱמִיד עַצְמוֹ בִּפְנֵי סַכָּנָה גְּדוֹלָה אוֹ הֶפְסֵד גָּדוֹל לְטוֹבַת אֲחֵרִים אוֹ לְטוֹבַת רַעְיוֹן הַיָּקָר לוֹ. שִׁלֵּם בְּיוֹדְעִין מְחִיר אִישִׁי כָּבֵד (מִלּוּלִית: הֶעֱלָה אֶת עַצְמוֹ כְּקָרְבָּן).
