Friendly letter

Friendly letter

A letter that inquires about a person’s well-being or provides information about their condition.

("Send him a friendly letter and hang this question among the sheets." — Rashi, Ketubot 67a. Also: "But when a person writes a friendly letter to his friend using biblical language to write pure language, it is permitted to write a few words without penmanship." — Tosafot HaRosh, Gittin 6b. Also: "The holy soul is ashamed to rejoice on Shabbat in the higher soul, which is a friendly letter from the Father... Therefore the Torah commanded to delight the body on Shabbat and festivals. When the body rejoices in its joy, the soul can rejoice in the joy of the Holy King, blessed be He." — S.Y. Agnon, The Lost, 13)
