If the first ones are the children of angels, we are children of men; and if the first ones are children of men, we are like donkeys
If the wise people who preceded us are like angels, we in comparison to them are only humans. And if they are merely humans, then we are as foolish as donkeys compared to them. A proverb expressing admiration and reverence for the wisdom of previous generations, emphasizing the gap between them and us.

אִם בְּנֵי הָאָדָם הַחֲכָמִים שֶׁקָּדְמוּ לָנוּ הֵם כְּמוֹ מַלְאָכִים, אֲנַחְנוּ בְּיַחַס אֲלֵיהֶם רַק בְּנֵי אָדָם. וְאִם הֵם רַק בְּגֶדֶר בְּנֵי אָדָם, אֲנַחְנוּ טִפְּשִׁים כְּמוֹ חֲמוֹרִים לְעֻמָּתָם. פִּתְגָּם הַמַּבִּיעַ הַעֲרָכָה וְהַעֲרָצָה לְחָכְמָתָם שֶׁל בְּנֵי הַדּוֹרוֹת הַקּוֹדְמִים, וְהַמַּדְגִּישׁ אֶת הַפַּעַר בֵּינָם לְבֵינֵנוּ.
