Comes in secret or in hiding. Comes like a thief (originally referring to a thief who comes to steal or rob and might kill in order not to be caught. The first source of the expression is in Exodus 22:1: "If the thief be found breaking in, and be smitten so that he dies, there shall be no bloodguilt for him." The meaning of the word 'machteret' in the Torah is a tunnel dug under a house to break into it).
