הגדרה (אנגלית)
By metaphor: he was humiliated. Great shame was caused to him (literally: his face became black as the charred bottoms of a pot in which cooking was done).
("And in the reign of Ahasuerus, at the beginning of his reign, they wrote a letter of hatred against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem (Ezra 4:6), and Samuel said: "The faces of Israel in his days were black as the rims of a pot" - Meghal Ya A"a, from the hand of the Holy One, the Blessed One, will go to her and say, "My daughter, why is all this anger, you will say before the Lord, and not according to the anger that has brought me into exile" Among the nations, you cursed me with evil curses and I was afflicted until my face became like the rim of a pot, and in all this I sanctified your great name" - Yalkut Shimoni Yeshayahu Remez Tamag, and so: "Then the face of the righteous man was turned like the rim of a pot, and he was greatly ashamed, for there is no greater disgrace than this" - Rabbi Nachman of Breslau/ Likutei Moharan, Torah 104, and so on: "If we were to write down the multitude of their sorrows...we would not be able to do so. Their faces have fallen very low and have become black like the rim of a pot" - Mendelei Mos/ Masaot Binyamin Hashilishi Yad, 10, and so on: "And they hid his arguments and nullified his words until his face was turned like the rim of a pot" - Agnon/ Elo And these, the work of the messenger from the Holy Land 15:323, and so: "You know that their faces are turned like the rim of a pot, sitting in the midst of ashes and groaning from within the vault of flesh" - H. Hazaz/ Dorot Harashonim, 37)
