דִּירַת עֲרַאי, דִּירַת אֲרָעִי
דִּירָה זְמַנִּית. הַהֶפֶךְ מִדִּירַת קֶבַע (הַמִּלָּה עֲרַאי נִכְתֶּבֶת גַּם אֲרָעִי) וּמִשְׁמָעָהּ זְמַנִּי אוֹ מִקְרִי).

A Temporary Residence

A temporary dwelling. The opposite of a permanent residence (the word עֲרַאי is also written as אֲרָעִי) and its meaning is temporary or incidental.
("Rava said: From here (Leviticus 23) in the Sukkot festival you shall dwell seven days. The Torah said: All seven days leave your permanent residence and dwell in a temporary residence" - Sukkah 2a; and also: "The parable here is for someone who dwells in one city but knows that his dwelling there is only a temporary residence, because his desire and intention is to go to another city where he will dwell permanently; there is no doubt that he will strive to buy fields and vineyards there" - Rabbeinu Behaye on Genesis chapter 23; and also: "And still the peace was given in a sukkah which is a temporary residence" - Agnon, 'Oreach Nata Lalun', p. 95; and also: "There was in that room an inn comparable to a shop of a seller of weariness, a temporary residence of 'Nisraf'" - H.
