Return Empty-Handed (חָזַר רֵיקָם)
Return Empty-Handed (חָזַר רֵיקָם)

Return Empty-Handed

Used figuratively: to return without bringing any benefit; to fail to fulfill one’s role or mission (literally: to return empty or in an empty manner).

("Rabbi Ḥanin said in the name of Rabbi Ḥanina: Whoever prolongs his prayer, his prayer does not return empty-handed. From where do we learn this? From Moses our teacher... But Rabbi Ḥiyya bar Abba said in the name of Rabbi Yoḥanan: Whoever prolongs his prayer and dwells on it—ultimately comes to heartache" - Berakhot 32b; and likewise: "The shamash knew that a widow's curse does not return empty-handed, and he felt distressed" - Agnon, City and Its Fullness, 59)
