No man makes himself out to be a villain

No man makes himself out to be a villain

A person is not inclined to incriminate himself or say bad things about himself when testifying or speaking about himself. Or: it is human nature to blame others rather than admit one's own guilt.

("And the Torah said: Do not set a wicked person as a witness—Rava said: a person is close to himself, and no man makes himself out to be a villain"—Sanhedrin 9b. Also: "Rabbi, but my soul is sinful. I should be ashamed of it..." And Rabbi Chiyya said: "No man makes himself out to be a villain... I command you to lift up your eyes"—Y.L. Peretz, Self-Sacrifice, 155.)
