A lion does not roar over a heap of straw, but over a heap of flesh
A lion only roars when it has good food within reach. Figuratively: When a person has abundance and plenty, they may become arrogant or sin. Alternatively: People tend to complain and grumble precisely when their situation is good. Or: Materialism and extravagance are more common among those who have everything and lack nothing.
(Thus Moses said before the Holy One, blessed be He: 'Master of the Universe, it was because of the silver and gold You gave to Israel in abundance that they made the golden calf.' The school of Rabbi Yannai said: 'A lion does not roar over a heap of straw, but over a heap of flesh.' אֵין אַרְיֵה שׁוֹאֵג אֶלָּא כַּאֲשֶׁר יֵשׁ לוֹ אֹכֶל טוֹב בְּהֶשֵּׂג יָדוֹ. בְּהַשְׁאָלָה: מֵרֹב טוֹבָה וְשֶׁפַע שֶׁיֵּשׁ לָאָדָם עָלוּל הוּא 'לִבְעֹט' וְלַחְטֹא. אוֹ: אֲנָשִׁים נוֹהֲגִים לְהִתְלוֹנֵן "וּלְקַטֵּר" דַּוְקָא כְּשֶׁמַּצָּבָם טוֹב. אוֹ: תּוֹפַעַת הַחָמְרָנוּת וְהַהוֹלֵלוּת נְפוֹצָה יוֹתֵר אֵצֶל אֵלּוּ שֶׁיֵּשׁ לָהֶם הַכֹּל וְאֵינָם חֲסֵרִים דָּבָר.
