Service of the Torah Greater Than Its Study (גָּדוֹל שִׁמּוּשָׁהּ שֶׁל תּוֹרָה יוֹתֵר מִלִּמּוּדָהּ)

Service of the Torah Greater Than Its Study

Service of the Torah – engaging in practical work and application of the Torah – is greater and preferred over mere study, because through service one progresses and honors the Torah by means of action and closeness to the sages.

("And Rabbi Yochanan said in the name of Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai: The service of the Torah is greater than its study, as it is stated (Kings II 3), ‘Here Elisha son of Shaphat poured water by the hand of Elijah,’ it is not said ‘he poured’ alone but ‘poured’ teaches that service is greater than study.")
