Eyeball

A poetic epithet for the eye.

(Rabbi Yosi said: The generation of the Flood did not become arrogant except because of the eyeball, which resembles water, as it is said (Genesis 6) "and they took wives for themselves from all whom they chose" — therefore he judged them by water, which resembles the eyeball — Sanhedrin 94a; and likewise: "The eyeball of a man is contracted and cannot encompass the City of the Holy One, blessed be He" — Agnon, Until Here, Tehilla, 140.)
