Awakening from below, awakening from above. According to tradition, the awakening of people 'from below', in the material world, towards the Holy One, blessed be He, brings about, so to speak, His awakening to intervene for the good of mankind. Turning from below upward leads to a turning from above downward.

הִתְעוֹרְרוּת מִלְּמַטָּה, הִתְעוֹרְרוּת לְמַעְלָה. ע"פ הַמָּסֹרֶת הִתְעוֹרְרוּת בְּנֵי הָאָדָם ש'לְמַטָּה', בָּעוֹלָם הַחֹמֶר, כְּלַפֵּי הקב"ה מְבִיאָה כִּבְיָכוֹל לְהִתְעוֹרְרוּת שֶׁלּוֹ לְהִתְעָרֵב לְטוֹבַת בְּנֵי הָאָדָם. הַפְּנִיָּה מִלְּמַטָּה לְמַעְלָה מְבִיאָה לַפְּנִיָּה מִלְּמַעְלָה לְמַטָּה.
