Sagi Nahor/ blind/ (lit. "rich in light")/ River sedge (סַגִּי נָהוֹר)

Sagi Nahor/ blind/ (lit. "rich in light")/ River sedge

A nickname for a blind person (literally from Aramaic: "abundant light"). From this came the expression "in the language of Saggi Nahor," meaning the opposite of what is said.

("Rab Sheshet was a Saggi Nahor" - Berakhot 58a; and: "This Saggi Nahor, may the spirit of his thief father blow away, has no eye under his brow except one, but it keeps watch before and behind" - Bialik / Behind the Fence, 6, p. 95; and: "It is a mitzvah to gladden a Saggi Nahor" - Agnon / Yesterday, the Day Before Yesterday, 406; and: "Fifty years, in a dark tunnel, holding your hand and going on, like a Saggi Nahor, straight toward that same vast discourse" - Nathan Yonatan / Now in the Sheath of Darkness; and: "At times the figure of the musician Rahamim Kalifa, a Saggi Nahor, was seen playing opposite him" - Hayim Sabato / Like the Eyelids of Dawn, 89)
