To fall from one's wealth/ to be impoverished/ become poor
To lose one's property; to no longer be as rich as before; to become poorer.
("Blessed is one who gives thought to the poor"—that is, one who considers how to fulfill a commandment. How did Rabbi Yonah act? When he would see a man of good family who had fallen from his wealth, he would say to him: My son, because I heard that an inheritance has come to you from elsewhere, take it and you will repay the old debt. He turned to him and said: "A gift" — Jerusalem Talmud, Pe'ah 8:8. And likewise: "And there was a worthy, God-fearing man, but he began to fall from his wealth," and the Maggid, of blessed memory, said that they asked both of them; it is impossible for them to be in one place" — R. Nachman of Breslov, Likkutei Moharan, Torah 162. And likewise: "When we see a rich man who has fallen from his wealth and lost his money, we should not be astonished or investigate how it diminished, or speculate about his qualities" — Agnon, These and Those, And the Crooked Shall Be Made Straight, 51. And likewise: "They used to say to him briefly... we will merit the mitzvah with you. The merchant fell from his wealth. Silence is fitting for his honor. Fifty lire is his share of the honor" — Chaim Sabato, Like the Eyelids of Dawn, 15)
