Select Few/ elect/ distinguished/ outstanding/ elite/ exceptional individuals
Chosen or distinguished people. People who are distinguished by high virtue (character means a quality or a unique quality. The first source of the expression is in the Book of Deuteronomy, as in chapter 28: "And the Lord said to you today that you would be to him a people of character").
("to hint at the Torah's secrets, given to them mouth to mouth in a whisper.
