Days of His Futile Life/ the vein life (of a person)

In literary language: the days of a person's life that are without purpose; a term for human life that seems to have no meaning.

("For who knows what is good for a person in life, during the number of days of his futile life, which he makes pass like a shadow; for who can tell a person what will be after him under the sun" — Ecclesiastes 6:12; and likewise: "At fifty, he will remember the days of vanity / he will mourn, for the days of mourning have drawn near" — Abraham ibn Ezra, Ben Adam; and likewise: "In you, pages of Talmud, in you, withered leaves / beloved and ancient legends / in the days of my futile life, when I brood on painful things / in you my soul will find comfort" — H.N. Bialik, To the Aggadah)
