(Rabbi Yochanan said in the name of Rabbi Yosi ben Zimra: Whoever relies on his own merit—they attribute it to the merit of others. And whoever relies on the merit of others—they attribute it to his own merit. Moses relied on the merit of others, as it is said (Exodus 32): 'Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel Your servants.' They attributed it to his own merit, as it is said (Psalms 106): 'He said He would destroy them, had not Moses His chosen stood in the breach'—Berakhot 10b)
