Shame and disgrace, shame and reproach

By extension: great shame. Or: an exclamation of anger following an unworthy act (the earliest source is in the Bible, as in the verse Isaiah 45:16: "They shall be ashamed, and also confounded, all of them; they shall go in confusion together, those that are makers of idols").

(Once, bones were found in the Chamber of the Wood Store, and they wanted to declare Jerusalem impure. Rabbi Yehoshua stood up and said: Is it not shame and disgrace for us to declare impurity upon the city of our forefathers? Where are the people of the flood? Where are the people of Nebuchadnezzar? – Zevachim 113a, and similarly: "For everyone who drinks wine and becomes drunk—bruises, wounds, pain, shame and reproach come upon him, and the Holy Spirit cries out: Woe to whom, woe to whom? To those who linger over wine" – Midrash Aggadah (Buber) Leviticus ch. 10, and similarly: "It seems that here the priests were required to accept shame and disgrace, for not having been attentive in their service and prayer... and after this one was killed in their territory, they were not attentive in their prayer and service... it is fitting that they come here and accept shame and disgrace for what they have done" – Tzeror HaMor Deuteronomy ch. 5)
