The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, nor the father bear the iniquity of the son
Each person is punished only according to their own deeds and not because of the sins of another, even if that other is close to them. This idea corresponds to the phrase in Jeremiah 31:29: “The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge.”
