corner-stone

A stone (often laid ceremonially) as the foundation of a building being constructed (literally: a foundation stone). Figuratively: something fundamental and essential.

("Who determined its measurements—surely you know! Or who stretched the measuring line upon it? On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone?" – Job 38:5–6; also: "Side by side will be displayed the portraits of... the two thinkers whose doctrines are the cornerstone of the kingdom" – H. Be’er, Feathers, p.146; and: "And he dreams that just as he built the city, he will lay the cornerstone of the Temple" – Yoram Taharlev, He Will Bring It in His Hands)
