The soul resides inside the body and utilizes its physical capabilities to function.
(From here we learn the importance of the five human senses, for they are the essence of a person’s actions in the performance of commandments, and likewise in the commission of transgressions. Through them one merits reward and through them one is punished, according to how one chooses to use them. They correspond to the five books of the Torah, to the five expressions of “light” in Genesis, and to the five names that the soul possesses. They constitute the perfection of the body, which is the sanctuary of the soul, and the soul reveals its deeds through them.)

הַנֶּפֶשׁ שׁוֹכֶנֶת בְּתוֹךְ הַגּוּף וּפוֹעֶלֶת בְּאֶמְצָעוּת יְכוֹלוֹתָיו הַפִיזִיּוֹת.
