A senior commander. A person in command of a group of people. A person in authority. The person who is held in high esteem and who is entrusted with calculated missions (a nickname given to a commander-in-chief in the army).

בַּעַל תַּפְקִיד בָּכִיר. אָדָם בַּעַל גִּישָׁה לְאָדָם בַּעַל סַמְכוּת. הָאָדָם שֶׁעָלָיו סוֹמְכִים וְשֶׁמְּטִילִים עָלָיו שְׁלִיחוּיוֹת חֲשׁוּבוֹת (כִּנּוּי מִקְרָאִי לִמְפַקֵּד רָאשִׁי בַּצָּבָא).
