A brand plucked from the fire / survivor

A brand plucked from the fire / survivor

A term for a person who has survived a great disaster; like a burning coal that remains after a fire.

(“I overthrew some of you, as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and you were like a brand plucked from the fire; yet you did not return to Me, says the Lord.” – Amos 4:11. Also: “And as brands plucked, a faint glow there / Of weary souls and poor spirits” – H.N. Bialik, The Talmud Student)
