A designation for the Samaritans (Cutheans), or for converts who converted out of coercion or fear of punishment and not from deep religious conviction.

("And it came to pass at the beginning of their dwelling there, they did not fear the LORD; and the LORD sent lions against them, which killed some of them... And one of the priests who were exiled from Samaria came and dwelt in Bethel, and taught them how to fear the LORD" - 2 Kings 17:25-27, and likewise: "Rabbi Nehemiah said: One is a lion’s convert, one is a dream’s convert, and one is a convert of Mordechai and Esther - they are not true converts until they convert at this time; at this time, do you hold otherwise? Rather, the mother: at this time!" - Yebamot 24b, and likewise: "Rabbi Meir renders impure - for the Cutheans are true converts, and the sages purify - for the Cutheans are lions’ converts" - Niddah 50b)
