Disputants/ Debaters/ Dialecticians

Disputants/ Debaters/ Dialecticians

A designation for sages possessing the ability of speech and persuasion, knowledgeable in disputing and defending their opinions (literally: owners of shields from the armor used in battle. See also: "the shield opposite him").

("A story about a certain student who came before Rabbi Yehoshua, who asked him: Is the evening prayer voluntary or obligatory? He answered: voluntary. He then came before Rabban Gamliel, who asked him the same question. He answered: obligatory. Rabban Gamliel said to him: But Rabbi Yehoshua said it is voluntary! He replied: Wait until the disputants (בַּעֲלֵי תְּרִיסִין) enter the study hall." - Berakhot 27b)
