No one labors over a meal only to waste it

No one labors over a meal only to waste it

A person does not toil in preparing a meal only to throw it away. Figuratively: one is not willing to labor in vain and incur losses without enjoying the fruits of their work.

("What benefit did the sages achieve with their ordinance? — Rava said: It is established: No one labors over a meal only to waste it" - Ketubot 10a. Also: "If he had already decided to give the woman the money... why did he give her only two hundred and fifty rubles? Surely, no one labors over a commandment only to waste it" - Mordechai ben Yechezkel, Book of Tales, Part Four, The One Who Scrutinizes Himself Like a Hair's Breadth, 211)
