If there is no flour, there is no Torah; if there is no Torah, there is no flour
Material subsistence is a necessary condition for study, and study is a necessary condition for material existence. If there is no food or money, one cannot study Torah, and if there is no Torah, one cannot earn anything. A proverb emphasizing the close connection between the need to earn a living in order to study, and the need to study in order to earn a living. Livelihood and study depend on each other.
("Rabbi Elazar ben Azariah says: If there is no Torah, there is no proper conduct; if there is no proper conduct, there is no Torah...if there is no flour, there is no Torah; if there is no Torah, there is no flour"—Avot 3:17. Also: "I found it written: If there is no flour, there is no Torah, for anyone who has no trade, who has no bread and cannot earn a living from his trade, even if he is wise and God-fearing, it is impossible that he will not sin due to his lack—he may take a bribe, covet others' possessions, or steal and rob"—Minchat Yitzchak, Avot 3:17.
