Sat on the mortar/ to ponder/weigh (consider) carefully/to meditate on a problem

To deliberate on a topic; to weigh and consider the matter.

("They said to him (the sages of Israel to Rabbi Dosa ben Harkinas): What is the law regarding a daughter-in-law? He said to them: The dispute between Beit Shammai and Beit Hillel ... but I testify before heaven and earth that on this mortar Haggai the prophet sat" - Yevamot 16a, and likewise: "How much money can a person make in America?... For many years my uncle Pinny sat on this matter, weighed and investigated, corrected, and thought thoughts" - Sh. Aleichem / Chtreylivke in New York, 35)
