The Stones We Sat Upon in Our Youth Made War Against Us in Our Old Age

The Stones We Sat Upon in Our Youth Made War Against Us in Our Old Age

Figuratively: those who grew up under us now turn against us; or, things neglected in youth come back to harm us later in life.

("Rabbi Yishmael son of Rabbi said: The stones we sat upon in our youth made war against us in our old age." – Jerusalem Talmud, Beitzah 1:7; and also: "A beam upon which he sat in his childhood made war against him in his old age." – H. Hazaz, The Early Generations)
