Books are the primary and most important tool for acquiring knowledge throughout life, and a person's knowledge is according to the books he reads.
(A person's wisdom reaches only as far as his books reach, therefore a person should sell all he has and buy books. For one who does not have the Talmudic books cannot be an expert, and one who does not have medical books will not be knowledgeable in medicine, and likewise, one who does not have books of logic or wisdom will not be wise in them. Therefore, the sages said: 'The more books, the more wisdom.' הַסְּפָרִים הֵם הַכְּלִי הָעִקָּרִי וְהֶחָשׁוּב לִרְכִישַׁת הַשְׂכָּלָה בְּמַהֲלַךְ הַחַיִּים, וִידִיעוֹתָיו שֶׁל הָאָדָם הִנָּן בְּהֶתְאֵם לַסְּפָרִים שֶׁהוּא קוֹרֵא.
