Figuratively: A person does not receive appreciation from the people of his own place but rather in other places (this expression has parallels in other languages).

(The idea is brought in 'Ahavat Olam' by Maharshal Algazi, 25b, and also: 'After they accepted a rabbi from outside the city and he served as their rabbi for several years, once he married a local they wanted to remove him from his position for that reason.
