Let your house be open wide, and let the poor be members of your household

Open your home to guests so that even poor people can stay there as if they were members of the household. A call for a high moral standard of hosting those in need.

("Yosi ben Yochanan, a man of Jerusalem, says: Let your house be open wide, and let the poor be members of your household" — Pirkei Avot 1:5). Likewise: "It is better for a person to take great effort so that Israel may be supported from his possessions, and let the poor be members of his household, and charity will be counted to him when he gives his money" — Pele Yoetz / Ot Shin, Shemesh. And likewise: "He never grew angry at anyone and would receive everyone with a pleasant countenance, and his house was open to the poor" — Agnon / Ir uMelo'ah, 563. And also: "The great and holy rabbi Rabbi Yeshayahu Horowitz, the holy Shelah... taught Torah to all the children of the diaspora. His house was open wide, and students from the four corners of the earth, sons of the poor and of the rich, came to gather the dust from his feet. His house was a house of assembly for the sages" — Mordekhai ben Yechezkel / Sefer HaMa'asiyot, Part Four, Kabbalat Panim, 295)
