The sufferings that befall a person atone for his sins.

("To what are the righteous likened in this world? To a tree that is wholly standing in a place of purity, but its branch tends toward a place of impurity; if you cut off the branch, the whole tree stands in a place of purity. So too, the Holy One, blessed be He, brings sufferings upon the righteous in this world so that they may inherit the World to Come" - Kiddushin 40b, and likewise: "And we also find that Reish Lakish said: Reish Lakish said, it is stated 'covenant' with salt and it is stated 'covenant' with sufferings: 'These are the words of the covenant.'
